ESAA Cross Country Cup Final - ReportSaturday 30th November 2013
A big thank you to the Head teacher and staff involved at Southend High School for Girls for a brilliantly organised ESAA Cross Country Cup final.
The course twisted around the school fields and whilst at first sight looked to be flat, proved to be deceptively undulating and fast with a long gradual climb at the start and finish. The winner in each race was decided by the time the runners entered the wooded area on the first lap.
Putney High School provided the individual winner in both the Junior and Inter Girls races with clear wins from Alex Brown and Katy-Ann McDonad and Katy lead Putney High home to win the team event. Lymm High School fought hard down the finishing straight for second place having three runners home in the top 20. The Junior Girls race was narrowly decided by a close margin of 3 points, Aylesbury High gaining the first spot from James Allen’s Girls School.
In the Junior boys race the top three quickly pulled away led by Finn Birnie with second spot changing hands around the twisting course. The long climb home saw Adam Caulifield use his strength to pull away from Joshua Edwards to finish second and lead Northampton Boys school to a dominant win.
Ben Dijkstra set out his intentions early in the Inter Boys race by steadily increasing his lead over the three lap course. The inter boys event saw the closest team competition with Dr Challoner’s Grammar School winning by one point from Queen’s College.
There were a number of new schools competing at the championships this year, which proves to be increasingly popular with over 1500 school teams entered.
