ESAA MINIATHLON RULES

Competition Specifications & Guidelines

The events are for Boys & Girls who are aged 11 years and Under 13 on 31st August/1st September at the end of the current school year (normally Years 6 & 7).

The 4 groups shown here may be offered. Each competitor then chooses to compete in 3 separate events taking one event only from each of 3 pre-selected groups.

Track Events	from 80m, 150m, 600m, or 800m
Walking Events	800m and/or 1000m
Jumping events	Long Jump and/or High Jump
Throwing events	from Cricket ball(boys), Rounders ball(girls), Shot, Javelin or Discus

Scoring is as per the points table provided. The competitors' final performance is the aggregate of points scored from each of the 3 groups.

In all field events, except High Jump, 3 trials each are allowed.

Events may be performed in any order, according to numbers participating and the time available. Competitors should not compete in more than the 3 events that they have selected.

All other rules are as laid down by the English Schools' A.A. in their current Handbook.

Recommended weights of implements are

Shot	2.72 kg
Discus	0.75kg
Javelin	400 g
Cricket Ball (Boys)	4.75 oz
Rounders Ball (Girls)	standard size

It is not necessary to offer the whole range of events. There should, however, be a minimum of one event from each selected group.

Members of school staff, interested parents and older pupils can officiate. Particular note should be taken of the relevant Safety Measures contained within this booklet

Organisation prior to meeting allow at least 30 minutes prior to start	1	Pupils should select in which 3 event of 3 groups they wish to compete. It may help to have their choices written down on separate sheets.
	2	Pupils should then be divided into 4 or 5 Pools, according to their choice of activity. Maximum number in a Pool should be 12.
	3	Organizers should ensure that all available facilities are used from the very start of the meeting. If High Jump is to be offered, it is suggested that there be only 10 maximum in the first High Jump competition and that the Pool be seeded to include the better performers. This should avoid a delay later in the meeting.
	4	Events/Groups can be changed according to the number of officials/available facilities/ and the number of entries.

	As in all Combined Events competitions, all times in a timetable, except for the first events can only be approximate. It is essential, therefore, that organizers arrange a central administration point/announcer to which pupils can easily refer throughout the competition, so that they do not miss their event if the programme runs ahead of the scheduled time etc. Schedules have been based upon 40 high jump attempts, 10-14 short sprints and 40 horizontal jumps or short throws every 30 mins. The longer throwing events may take a little longer, but entries could be fewer. If there are greater or smaller entries, or fewer officials available etc. the timetable will need to be changed accordingly. This schedule is only a suggestion, aimed at giving guidance. Individual teachers may wish to change their approach completely. This would be quite acceptable as long as the basic competition rules, and safety measures, are maintained.

Computerised results program

A computer program designed specifically to process entries and results for this event is available. This allows quick and simple competitor entry, results input, and results printing. It also automatically creates a web page for you to put on your own school site, or to send to us at the ESAA web site. Finally, it prints out a summary in the form shown below so that you can send it to the ESAA Combined Events Secretary.

Download the program setupminiathlon.exe into any directory you choose, then execute it to install the miniathlon program (simply double click the file). The program installation includes the rules (as on this page) and comprehensive help on how to use it. Once installed you can safely delete the setupminiathlon.exe file.

The program can cater for up to 100 boys and 100 girls, and runs under Windows 95/98/NT.

The latest data file containing the scoring tables is dated 01/01/2000.
